C.E. DRESSAGE GROUP

LECTURE / DEMONSTRATION - THE BASICS OF DRESSAGE

_________________________________________

August 2007

Over 70 people attended 'An evening on the Basics of Dressage' held by knid permission of Richard Hoyland at Birch Laithes Farm.

With the evening begining at 7pm it was a prompt start in order to get through the action packed schedule of events.

The evening was hosted by C.E Dressage group with organiser and trainer Joanne Wainwright co hosted by Liam Sloan of WPW Dressage.

The first group of horses shown were at Preliminary level. The basic paces were looked at with all the horses throughout the evening but the main areas which effect the Preliminary level were concentrated on at this point.
Kirsty Mester and Murphy, Danielle Marsh and Mac and Jane Schindler and Sophie were the guinea pigs at this level. All the horses showed usual errors in training at this level - not in front of the leg, stiffening to the bend, inaccuracies throughout the test. Those in attendance had a programme of events which outlined the 10 most common faults seen in dressage judging. The areas for example - hollowing to canter, loss of rhythm, etc were looked over as most people find these errors on their score sheet themselves and it was well commented that these points helped.

Danielle - after the session - the horse had become more relaxed and softer in the frame, both are enjoying a well earned rest! Danielle and Mac are trained by Joanne Wainwright.

Kirsty Mester and Murphy

The combination of Kirsty Mester and the gorgeous Murphy. They worked on the suppleness on the frame and encouraging the horse to stretch through his back into a deeper rounder outline. Kirsty and Murphy have recently begun training with Joanne Wainwright. Kirsty appears to be taking it all in!

The third horse - Sophie owned and ridden by Jane Schindler showed exercises to get the horse in front of the leg which is a common problem at this level. Sophie struggled with the suppleness due to her lack of enthusiasm to go forward. These areas were demonstrated and Sophie soon adapted to her new method of training.

THE NOVICE HORSES

Two horses demonstrated Novice level as difficulties caused one of the riders not to attend but never the less the pair showed great work.

Lydia Hayes, fresh from qualifying for the Pet Plan Area Festivals, with the adorable Rufforth Mabel wowed the crowd with the super trot. The mare looks beautiful even more so when she moves which suprised a few folk!
Lydia, trained by Joanne Wainwright, gave some good examples of changes through trot, the greater suppleness needed at this level, free walk, rein back and a great medium trot.

Since the evening Lydia and Mabel have qualified for the Area Festival Finals - good luck!

Emma Walters and the stricking Woodcroft Frazer showed some work in the give and retake the reins, the transitions, free walk, and rein back. Frazer is a 5 year old Trekhaner from the Woodcroft Stud in Peterborough and after a little tension at the start settled down and produced some possitive work. It was really good for them to show that horses are unpredicable event though he didnt do anything untoward he was a little inattentive which happens to some horses when moving to comptition venues.

ELEMENTARY / MEDIUM HORSES

While the spectators grabbed a coffe or some fish and chips and a beer! The horses were prepared and warmed in to demonstrate Elementary and Medium work.

The darkness was drawing in proving a little too much for Liam's horse, Bravo at times who had a few spooky moments.

Liam showed the softness and the greater suppleness required at this level still concentrating on the correctness in the paces. The working of the horses neck down and forward, the leg yeild in trot and canter and the lovely music freestyle demonstration to which he has gone on to win the Pet Plan Festival with.

sam

Sam - sadly darkness got the better of us on the night but the point which the whole night was set upon was shown clearly that you dont have to have lots of money or a "dressage horse" to be successful - more so when Sam appeared and showed off!

All that was let to do at the end of a great evening was to thank the riders - we hope we were gentle on you and hopefully you took home a pointer or two!
